Bulldogs slay Dragons

The Blackfalds Bulldogs recorded their second straight win when they came from behind and beat the Drumheller Dragons 5-4 in overtime Wednesday at the Eagle Builders Centre.

The Dragons opened the scoring 1:19 into the first when Ty Whitford beat Jackson Glassford, who made 18 saves in the victory. The Bulldogs tied the game at one 6:38 into the frame after Carter Yarish solved Eric Ward from a precarious angle along the right boards.

The Dragons took a 2-1 lead 14:02 into the first when Grayson Dietrich recorded his 14th of the season shorthanded. The Bulldogs tied the game at two 16:51 into the period after Ryan Johnson hammered home his 13th of the campaign.

Drumheller took a 3-2 advantage 9:26 into the second on the power play when Luke Fennig beat Glassford with a backhand.

Blackfalds tied the game at three 14:28 into the third after Connor Poffenroth netted his fourth of the season. Drumheller responded under a minute later when Vann Yuhas found the back of the net, giving the Dragons a 4-3 edge. The Bulldogs tied the game at four 17:23 into the third when Kaiden Ellertson sent a seeing-eye shot past Ward for his third of the campaign.

Regulation solved nothing, so the Bulldogs and Dragons went into overtime tied at four. Just 1:18 into the extra session, Tye Carriere ended the game when he beat Ward for his 12th of the season.

With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 17-25-1, which still has them in sixth place in the AJHL South.

Blackfalds will look for its third straight win Friday night at home when they host the Olds Grizzlys at the Eagle Builders Centre. Friday’s game gets underway at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs conclude their weekend Saturday on home ice versus Olds.
