The Blackfalds Bulldogs announced Wednesday they have acquired 2002-born defenceman Joe Harney in a three-way trade.

“Joe has a high hockey IQ and he makes a great first pass,” said Al Parada, the director of hockey operations with the Blackfalds Bulldogs. “We’re excited to acquire Joe and we’d like to welcome him to the organization.”

Harney hails from Needham, MA, USA and spent the 2020-21 season with the Cape Cod Whalers 18U AAA team. In 30 games with the Whalers, Harney recorded 11 points.

“I’m a smart, puck-moving defenceman who takes care of things in his own zone before jumping into the offense,” said Harney. “My personal goal this season is to be the best teammate I can and to earn a college scholarship. My team goals are to make the playoffs, have fun with my teammates and enjoy being at the rink each day.”

Part of the three-way swap sees the La Ronge Ice Wolves (SJHL) acquire 2001-born forward Conrad Mitchell, who appeared in four games this season with the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs thank Conrad for his contributions to the organization and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Meanwhile, the Cowichan Valley Capitals (BCHL) receive a player development fee in the three-way deal.

The Bulldogs are back in action Thursday in Red Deer when they meet the Whitecourt Wolverines for the first time this season at Servus Arena. Thursday’s game is being hosted by the Red Deer North Star Chiefs U16 AAA team.

Following Thursday’s contest, the Bulldogs will take some time off before travelling to Olds Oct. 27.
